My epic camping gear kit

As it is winter time, I’m not biking to anywhere…  Thou I might have gone out to a laavu near by and made a fire and cooked some bacon.

So to write at least something I wanted to introduce to you my compact “quick-to-go” camping/survival set that I’ve build for myself and what I think is a very handy and light weight enough to just grab with me when going out. Fits into a backpack. Can be strapped onto a backpack. Or just throw it into the trunk of your car.

The idea of this set is to have all one needs to build fire and do other epic bushcraft things, while “out there”. Build around two tacticool pouches and an axe with a blade guard, it is (almost) all that one needs when going to camping, hiking or bikepacking trip.

The set contains two tacticool pouches pals strapped together and an axe strapped on the backside pals loops of the other pouch. The axe sheet cover acts as a carrying handle for the whole beauty. Total weight about one kilo.

On the front side I have also two spare carabiners that are spares for my hammock set.

On the backside you can see how the axe is strapped into the pouch and the classic Mora knife also hangs in there, ready for use.

Open the strap and one can easily pull the axe out. Knife is quite old and has seen some life, but it’s a tool, it won’t need to look pretty as long as it gets the job done.

On the zipper puller I have one small green LED light, so I can see into the pouch in darkness and to give that first light when needed. It can also be left on and hanging from the pouch when walking around and carrying the set from the axe guard handle all strapped in. It gives just enough light to see where I’m stepping into.

In the first pouch I have an emergency / survival blanket, one of those heavier ones, not the thinnest folio thing. Also my old trusty Maglite Solitaire. No LEDs in here. Also here lays my fire steel with a striker and a compass, just in case I would ever need one.

Opening the larger pouch…

From left to right some metal wire for all one’s craft needs. Also a roll of nylon cord, the cheapest one, in high-vis color.

Upper tinbox at the moment has only one fire starter bag in it: I need to refill that. Lower tinbox has two lighters and two batteries, one AA and one AAA.

Headlamp is a necessity and one should never go anywhere without some TP! Also a bottle of hand sanitiser is stuffed into the TP roll.

Then there are two packs of hand warmers and last plastic pouch is for eating utensils.

Closeup of the TP, hand sanitiser and the eating utensils, that contain pair of sporfs and a spork and some wet wipe / hand wipe single packs and one sharper and cleaner knife for cooking and preparing the food.

The emergency blanket and the hand warmers are in there “just in case”, cause one never knows what can happen. Also you need to remember that it is winter time in here Finland and even it’s not the coldest winter ever, it’s still way below 0 ºC. And when it is around zero decree Celsius the snow on the ground is wet and it might ever rain more water down, so getting wet means getting cold really fast.

But that’s it for today. I really think that I need to go out more often and maybe do a blog post about a nice winter day in a laavu, even if it’s only a day trip for few hours.

Till next time.
Bye!
